Pangasinan Town’s ‘Kalabaw’ Festival Commemorates Dairy Industry Triumph

Pangasinan’s ‘Kalabaw’ Fest: Honoring the Dairy Heritage in Style

The inauguration of “Kalabaw” (Carabao) Food Festival in Bantog, Asingan, Pangasinan, ignited joy and celebration among residents, marking a significant milestone in the region’s dairy industry. Spearheaded by the Bantog Samahang Nayon Multi-Purpose Cooperative (BSNMPC) in collaboration with the municipal government, the event served as a testament to the hard-earned success of local dairy production.

In his address, Rolly Mateo Sr., Chairman of BSNMPC, expressed disbelief at the journey they’ve traversed, reminiscing about the challenges encountered before achieving this triumph. Reflecting on their humble beginnings in 2009 with a mere PHP10,000 capital and a slew of debts, Mateo recounted the cooperative’s evolution, boasting an increase from the initial 200 members to a steadfast 300.

Fast-forward to the inaugural Kalabaw Food Festival, the cooperative allocated PHP500,000 from its funds for the festivities, showcasing its gratitude to national government agencies and the municipal government for their unwavering support since inception. Presently, BSNMPC boasts assets exceeding PHP100 million, with notable earnings of PHP26 million last year alone from contracts with the Department of Education (DepEd) and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for 50,000 liters of carabao milk.

Highlighting their current standing, Mateo revealed BSNMPC’s possession of 900 carabaos, including 90 milking ones. With aspirations to elevate their production to 500 liters per day from the current 180 to 200 liters daily, the cooperative remains steadfast in its commitment to growth and sustainability.

BSNMPC’s recent feat includes the construction of a PHP10.5-million building and warehouse on a six-hectare land procured from its earnings, showcasing a tangible manifestation of its progress and dedication. Mateo, extending an invitation to fellow townmates, encouraged them to explore dairy production as a means to enhance livelihood opportunities, underscoring the cooperative’s mission to empower the local community.

The inaugural Kalabaw Food Festival not only celebrated the achievements of the BSNMPC but also served as a testament to the resilience and determination of the Pangasinan community in fostering sustainable agricultural practices and economic development.
