The 5th edition of Kalutong Filipino commenced on Friday, placing a significant emphasis on the preservation of heirloom cuisines and cherished heritage dishes. Spanning from April 19 to 21, the event is geared towards empowering the youth to champion Philippine culinary heritage, with a fervent aspiration for its transmission to future generations.
Director Tanya Rabat-Tan of the Department of Tourism in Davao Region (DOT-11) underscored the profound significance of heirloom dishes and local cuisines, characterizing them as more than mere sustenance but as embodiments of history, culture, and identity. She emphasized their pivotal role in shaping communities, preserving cultural heritage, providing livelihood opportunities, and bolstering economic growth and tourism.
In a collaborative effort to safeguard and promote the region’s culinary legacy, Tan revealed their partnership with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Department of Agriculture (DA) as they commemorate Filipino Food Month, also known as Buwan ng Kalutong Filipino.
“This year, we invite you to embark on a gastronomic odyssey through Davao Region, delving into our provinces’ time-honored cuisines and drawing insights from esteemed local gastronomy experts over the next three days,” Tan articulated. She further highlighted the event’s role in fostering appreciation for the region’s indigenous produce and the craftsmanship of local farmers and artisans.
Echoing Tan’s sentiments, Macario Gonzaga, Director of DA-11, lauded the event as a platform for farmers and fisherfolk to be acknowledged as the primary contributors of the ingredients showcased in Davao’s culinary offerings. He emphasized the event’s significance in reinforcing the younger generation’s understanding of their crucial role as future food producers for the nation.
April is officially designated as Filipino Food Month or Buwan ng Kalutong Pilipino by Presidential Proclamation No. 469, signed in 2018. This month-long celebration serves as a poignant reminder of the richness and diversity of Philippine cuisine, as well as an opportunity to honor its enduring legacy.
