An incumbent vice mayor of Guinsiliban, Camiguin Province was arrested on Tuesday after agents of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) seized suspected shabu and a firearm during a court-authorized search of his residence, authorities said. The official, a 66-year-old identified only by the alias “Tata”, now faces charges under the country’s anti-drug law.
PDEA reported confiscating five heat-sealed plastic sachets of suspected methamphetamine hydrochloride, or shabu, with an estimated street value of PHP 102,000, along with a 9mm pistol, a magazine, 22 live rounds of ammunition, two mobile phones, and assorted drug paraphernalia.
Search Warrant Leads to Arrest
The operation unfolded in Purok 3, Barangay North Poblacion in the quiet island municipality of Guinsiliban, part of Camiguin Province in Northern Mindanao. PDEA agents implemented a search warrant on Tuesday; the agency confirmed the arrest in a public statement the following day.
Authorities did not disclose further operational details, including whether other suspects were under investigation. The vice mayor was taken into custody and is expected to face charges for possession of dangerous drugs and drug paraphernalia under Republic Act No. 9165, also known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
Seized Contraband and Firearm
PDEA said agents recovered the suspected narcotics packaged in five sachets, a common method used in the retail distribution of shabu. The estimated value of PHP 102,000 points to a quantity beyond casual personal use, though authorities have not specified the total weight.
In addition to the drugs, officers seized a 9mm pistol with a magazine and 22 live rounds. The presence of a firearm adds another layer of gravity to the case, potentially raising questions about public safety in a small municipality where local officials are entrusted with maintaining peace and order.
PDEA: No One Is Above the Law
In its statement, PDEA underscored its position that public office does not shield anyone from prosecution.
“PDEA assures the public that all individuals involved in illegal drug activities, regardless of position or status, will be held accountable under the law,” the agency said.
The agency added that it remains firm in its nationwide campaign against illegal drugs. “PDEA remains steadfast in its commitment to intensify nationwide anti-drug operations in pursuit of a safer, drug-free Philippines under the vision of Bagong Pilipinas,” it said.
Impact on a Small Island Community
Guinsiliban is one of the municipalities that make up Camiguin, a small island province known more for its volcanic landscapes and tight-knit communities than for high-profile criminal cases. In such settings, local government officials often have direct, day-to-day contact with residents. The arrest of a sitting vice mayor can ripple through the community, unsettling public confidence in leadership.
While authorities have not reported wider disruptions, the case casts a spotlight on the persistence of illegal drugs beyond major urban centers. For residents of barangays like North Poblacion, issues of safety and governance are not abstract policy debates but matters that shape daily life—from public markets to community gatherings.
Legal Proceedings Ahead
The vice mayor faces prosecution under Republic Act No. 9165, which penalizes the unauthorized possession of dangerous drugs and related paraphernalia. The law applies uniformly across the Philippines, carrying severe penalties depending on the quantity and nature of the substances involved.
PDEA has not announced whether additional charges, including those related to the seized firearm and ammunition, will be pursued.
As the case proceeds, it serves as a stark reminder that in the government’s anti-drug campaign, even elected officials can find themselves on the other side of the law.
