DOT Announcement: Philippines Welcomes Over 2 Million International Tourists
As of April 24, the Department of Tourism (DOT) revealed that the Philippines has welcomed over 2 million international visitors to its shores. Leading the influx are travelers from South Korea, solidifying the country’s position as a favored destination among global tourists. In monetary terms, the tourism receipts for the period spanning January 1 to March 31 have amounted to approximately PHP157.62 billion. This figure signifies an impressive recovery rate of about 120.70 percent from the revenue generated during the same timeframe in 2019, which stood at PHP130.59 billion.
The year 2019 marked a significant milestone for Philippine tourism, with record-breaking numbers attained prior to the onset of the global lockdown necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. According to data meticulously monitored by the DOT, a total of 2,010,522 international visitors graced Philippine soil during the reporting period. Of this figure, foreign tourists accounted for 94.21 percent, amounting to 1,894,076 arrivals, while overseas Filipinos contributed the remaining 5.79 percent, totaling 116,446 arrivals. This notable uptick represents a 15.11 percent increase compared to the international arrivals recorded during the corresponding period in the previous year, which tallied at 1,746,630.
Maintaining its stronghold as the leading source market for inbound visitor arrivals, South Korea spearheaded the list with 27.19 percent, equivalent to 546,726 arrivals. Following closely behind are travelers from the United States, comprising 15.71 percent of the total with 315,816 arrivals. China, Japan, and Australia rounded out the top five source markets, contributing 6.49 percent (130,574 arrivals), 6.13 percent (123,204 arrivals), and 4.38 percent (88,048 arrivals) respectively. Canada, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, Singapore, and Germany secured positions sixth through tenth in the ranking.
Expressing optimism about the upward trajectory of international tourist arrivals, Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco underscored the importance of continued investments in tourism infrastructure. Frasco emphasized the need for enhanced connectivity and improvements in air, land, and sea infrastructure to further bolster tourist numbers. The DOT has set an ambitious target of welcoming 7.7 million international visitors to the Philippines this year, nearing the pre-pandemic record achieved in 2019 when the country welcomed an estimated 8.26 million inbound visitors.
