One Philippine Army soldier was killed and four others were injured after a military truck crashed along the TarlacâPangasinanâLa Union Expressway (TPLEX) in Villasis, Pangasinan on Friday, May 8. The incident occurred as troops were returning from this year's Balikatan exercises, authorities said.
The truck was traveling northbound when it suffered a blown tire, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle then overturned and slid across the highway.
Victims and Response
The fatalities were identified by the Philippine Army as Private First Class Ronnie L. Dela Cruz, who died on the spot from severe head injuries. The four injured soldiersâPrivates First Class Mark Anthony R. Santos, John Paul M. Fernandez, and Cpl. Rodelio C. Gatchalianâwere rushed to a nearby hospital in Urdaneta City.
Two of the injured remain in critical condition, according to an initial report from the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Region 1. The PNP said the truck belonged to the Army's 5th Infantry Division.
âWe are deeply saddened by this incident. Initial investigation points to a tire blowout as the main cause,â said Maj. Gen.Audie S. Reuyan, commander of the 5th Infantry Division, in a statement released Saturday.
Context of the Incident
The soldiers were part of a larger contingent that had just completed the annual Balikatan joint military exercises with the United States. The exercises, held in various parts of Luzon, concluded on May 7. The truck was heading back to their home base in Camp Servillano Aquino in Tarlac.
Balikatan is a regularly scheduled bilateral exercise aimed at enhancing interoperability between the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the U.S. military. This year's edition involved around 9,000 Filipino and American troops.
Road Safety on TPLEX
Traffic on the TPLEX was partially closed for about three hours following the accident. The North Luzon Expressway Corporation (NLEX Corp.), operator of the expressway, confirmed the closure. Motorists were advised to take alternate routes via the MacArthur Highway.
The TPLEX is a four-lane expressway stretching over 88 kilometers. It has been the site of several vehicular accidents in recent years, including a bus crash in 2023 that killed two. The PNP has not issued any citation against the driver pending a full investigation.
Investigation Underway
The Philippine Army said it will conduct its own investigation into the crash. The military is also coordinating with the PNP and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to determine if road conditions contributed to the incident.
âWe assure the families of the victims that we will provide full assistance,â Reuyan said. âWe are also reviewing our vehicle maintenance protocols to prevent such tragedies in the future.â
As of Monday morning, three of the four injured soldiers were listed in stable condition at the Urdaneta City Hospital. One remains under intensive care.
The incident has raised questions about the safety of military vehicles on the country's expressways. The AFP said it will require mandatory inspections of all trucks returning from major exercises.
