CEBU CITY โ A fast-moving fire swept through Sitio Proper, Barangay Ermita here on Saturday night, April 4, 2026, displacing 349 residents across 98 families. The blaze was the largest of five separate fires that struck Metro Cebu that same day.
The fire erupted around 9 p.m. and rapidly spread through tightly packed residential structures before firefighters could contain it. The Bureau of Fire Protection confirmed no fatalities occurred despite the fire's intensity and speed. Crews worked through the night to fully extinguish hotspots and prevent re-ignition.
"Our personnel responded immediately, but the density of the area presented significant challenges," a Bureau of Fire Protection official stated.
The Cebu City Public Information Office confirmed the scale of displacement, noting all affected residents were left homeless. Officials said the densely built environment complicated firefighting efforts and contributed to the rapid spread of flames across multiple structures.
The fire was among five separate blazes that hit Metro Cebu on Saturday. While the Ermita fire caused the most displacement, authorities reported the other incidents were smaller in scale and were contained without major casualties. This underscores the persistent fire risk in urban communities across the region.
Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the fire. BFP investigators are assessing the total property damage while examining the scene for evidence. Officials noted the densely built environment complicated firefighting efforts and contributed to the rapid spread. The investigation remains ongoing.
City officials said they would provide assistance to the displaced families. The local government is coordinating with relief agencies to address immediate needs, including temporary shelter and basic supplies.
BFP investigators continue their assessment to determine the cause and origin of the fire. Authorities reminded residents in high-density areas to observe fire safety protocols to mitigate risks.
