San Beda University leaned on star power and composure to sweep a crucial doubleheader against Jose Rizal University, with Angel Habacon and Axel Van Book delivering decisive performances in the NCAA Season 101 volleyball tournament on Friday at the San Andres Gym in Manila.
The victories lifted the Lady Red Spikers to a 4–1 record and steadied the Red Spikers at 3–2, while JRU’s teams continued to search for traction in a season that has tested their resolve.
Habacon anchors San Beda women in four-set victory
In the women’s match, Angel Habacon turned in a commanding all-around display, scoring 26 points to carry San Beda past the winless JRU Lady Bombers. Habacon tallied 24 attack points, added two service aces, and steadied the back row with nine receptions, giving San Beda control in key stretches of the match.
Habacon’s output was matched by a balanced supporting cast, highlighted by Janelle Bachar’s 21-point effort. Together, they provided the scoring punch and stability that allowed San Beda to dictate the pace and close out crucial sets.
Despite the loss, JRU showed signs of competitiveness. Kyla Navarra led the Lady Bombers with 24 points, while Nicole Deala added 23, underscoring the team’s ability to score even as its record slipped to 0–5.
Van Book powers San Beda men past JRU
The men’s contest followed with a similar script but tighter margins, as Axel Van Book spearheaded San Beda’s four-set win over the JRU Heavy Bombers, 25–22, 26–28, 25–19, 25–21.
Van Book erupted for 28 points, mixing 25 attacks with three blocks, while contributing 16 receptions and six digs. His versatility anchored San Beda on both ends of the court, especially after JRU stole the second set to threaten momentum.
JRU leaned heavily on Paolo Barrientos, who finished with 25 points in a spirited showing. Still, San Beda’s steadier passing and timely defense proved decisive, handing JRU its fourth loss in five matches.
Momentum builds for San Beda, questions linger for JRU
The twin results reinforced San Beda’s growing confidence as the tournament moves deeper into its schedule. The Lady Red Spikers’ 4–1 mark places them among the early pacesetters, while the men’s team steadied itself at 3–2 after an uneven start.
For JRU, the afternoon was another reminder of the fine margins in collegiate volleyball. Strong individual performances have not yet translated into victories, leaving the Lady Bombers at 0–5 and the Heavy Bombers at 1–4.
Played before a vocal crowd at the San Andres Gym, the doubleheader reflected the NCAA’s enduring pull in Metro Manila—where standout athletes like Habacon and Van Book continue to shape early storylines, and where each match adds pressure and possibility in equal measure as Season 101 unfolds.
