Philippines Extends Aid: Supporting Stranded Nationals Amid Dubai’s Flood Crisis
The Philippine Consulate General in Dubai has stepped in to aid Filipinos who found themselves stranded in the city’s airport following a severe storm that brought unprecedented rainfall and flooding to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) this week.
Consul General Marford Angeles revealed in a text message on Friday night that they had received assistance requests from 39 transiting passengers and over 37 residents.
“The Migrant Workers’ Office in Dubai has distributed food packs and provided financial aid to OFWs (overseas Filipino workers) and other affected residents due to the severe weather conditions,” Angeles stated.
The Consulate is actively monitoring the situation of stranded passengers at the airport and ensuring the well-being of those in need of assistance.
Recently, the Consulate arranged temporary accommodation for an elderly Filipino couple at the airport and supplied them with clothing. They also offered aid to 34 stranded Filipino students by providing food and water.
Angeles emphasized that more than 1,000,000 Filipino nationals reside in the UAE, with around 70 percent located in Dubai, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm al Quwain, Ajman, and Fujairah. Most of the assistance requests received by the consulate originate from Dubai and Sharjah.
“The unprecedented weather condition in the UAE has impacted the majority of residents across the seven emirates. Apart from a few exceptions, most areas experienced flooding,” Angeles added.
The Department of Migrant Workers confirmed earlier that three Filipino nationals lost their lives due to the floods – two women who suffocated inside their vehicle and a man whose vehicle fell into a sinkhole.
