Palace declares May 14 as special non-working holiday

President Rodrigo Duterte has declared May 14 as a special non-working holiday for the people to be able to vote on the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) nationwide elections.

The said announcement follows Proclamation No. 479 signed today by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea by the authority of the President.

“Monday, 14 May 2018 should be declared a special non-working day to enable the people to fully exercise their right of suffrage,” states the proclamation.

Earlier, the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has requested Duterte to announce May 14 as a holiday through Resolution No. 10301

The synchronized Barangay and SK polls, which were supposed to be conducted on October 23, 2017, was rescheduled to May 14, 2018 after Duterte signed Republic Act No. 10952, postponing the said elections. The local elections have been postponed twice under the Duterte administration.

According to the President, the postponement was due to the possible effect of the polls to the government’s ongoing campaign against illegal drugs. He added that this might result to candidates obtaining campaign fund from drug money.
