PNP tightens security as NPA anniversary nears

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is ready for possible attacks from the New People’s Army which will be celebrating its 49th founding anniversary on March 29, Maundy Thursday.

In line with this, PNP Chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa has directed all his regional directors and unit commanders to “fortify their community defenses and step up target-hardening measures” against the NPA, the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP).

“As we all know based on historical data, the CPP-NPA is known to launch offensive actions to drumbeat the commemoration of significant events in the underground organization” Dela Rosa said.

Dela Rosa has also ordered his men to “strengthen the defenses of ‘soft targets’ and avoid being caught flat-flooted in case of enemy actions.”

The Chief PNP also mentioned that they would “take advantage of the summer season” to launch tactical offensive operations against the remaining guerilla fronts.

According to the military, there are more than 4,000 suspected NPA members who have surrendered to authorities. The said number is expected to increase as President Duterte has encouraged them to return to the folds of the law and lay down their arms.
