House panel OKs divorce bill in PH

The committee level in the House of Representatives has approved the bill which legalizes divorce and dissolution of marriage in the Philippines.

Ten members of the Committee on Population and Family Relations voted “viva voce,” nodding on the said bill authored by lawmakers from different parties including Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez of Davao del Norte, Rep. Edcel Lagman of Albay, Rep. Pia Cayetano of Taguig City, Rep. Rodel Batocabe of Ako Bicol, Rep. Emmi de Jesus of Gabriela party-list, among others.

The Act of Absolute Divorce and Dissolution of Marriage provides for summary proceedings or speedy dissolution of marriage for those who have secured legal separation and those whose spouse was convicted of bigamous marriage, among others.

The said proposed bill also eliminates expensive fees related to divorce as the it mandates the state of give aid to poor petitioners with a real estate property of PhP 5 million and below by waving filing and lawyers’ fees, and orders the court to provide psychiatric and psychological services during proceedings.
