In Legaspi City, the Catanduanes Provincial Tourism Office has reported a significant surge in tourist arrivals during the first quarter of 2024 compared to the corresponding period in 2023.
Carmel Garcia, Chief of the Catanduanes tourism office, shared in an interview on Wednesday that this increase in arrivals has brought about expanded economic opportunities for tourism-related businesses. According to their records, the island province welcomed 35,363 tourists from January to March, marking a notable increase from the 25,656 visitors recorded in 2023.
Garcia emphasized that this upsurge has contributed substantially to the local economy, generating around PHP39.9 million from domestic tourism receipts and PHP11.5 million from foreign tourism receipts. These tourism-related activities have also led to the creation of approximately 43,142 jobs, encompassing various roles such as tour guides, transportation personnel, porters, van operators, waiters, housekeepers, vendors, and boat operators.
Several factors have been attributed to the rise in tourist arrivals, including extended weekends and the Holy Week celebration. Garcia highlighted the effectiveness of consistent promotional efforts across various platforms, which have helped attract visitors. Additionally, the sponsorship of medical missions by foreigners and the regular visits of a group of foreign women surfers have significantly boosted global awareness and interest in the province.
As the influx of tourists continues, the province is actively expanding its accommodation offerings to cater to the growing demand. Currently, there are 63 establishments across the 11 towns, providing a total of 672 rooms. Garcia expressed satisfaction that some hotels are expanding their accommodations, and new resorts are slated to open later this year. This expansion reflects the province’s commitment to becoming a premier destination, not only for initial visits but also for repeat tourism experiences.
Moreover, Garcia mentioned that the province has seen an increase in regional conventions being held on the island, further solidifying its position as an attractive destination for both leisure and business travelers.
In addition to promoting tourism, the Catanduanes Provincial Tourism Office has implemented the “Trees for Tourism” program to preserve the natural beauty of the island. Through this initiative, tourists, including locals, are encouraged to participate in tree planting activities, particularly in coastal areas. This collaborative effort aims to enhance environmental conservation while offering visitors the opportunity to engage in meaningful experiences that contribute to the sustainability of the destination.
Overall, Catanduanes boasts pristine beaches, breathtaking natural landscapes, and rich cultural heritage, all easily accessible for exploration. With its commitment to sustainable tourism practices and continuous efforts to enhance visitor experiences, Catanduanes is poised to become a leading destination for travelers seeking unforgettable adventures in the Philippines.
