The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) is slated to commence the construction of the Bulo Small Reservoir Irrigation Project (Bulo SRIP) in Bulacan.
The said project worth PhP 990.37-million is expected to irrigate 570 hectares of agricultural lands in Kalawakan, Doña Remedios (DRT) in Bulacan once fully-operational.
The Bulo SRIP also aims to bolster agricultural production in the said province through the help of irrigation and drainage infrastructures.
In particular, the project covers irrigation of 35 hectares of agricultural lands in Kalawakan, DRT, in addition to 535 hectares of agricultural lands in Malibay, San Miguel. This in turn will help around 500 local farmers.
Aside from agricultural purposes, the Bulo SRIP will be the catch basin of 20 barangays in Bulacan during the rainy season. In addition to flash flood prevention, it will also serve as a development site for inland fish culture in the upstream of Bulo dam.
The Bulo SRIP was made official last Friday through the ceremonial and capsule-laying of the project attended by NIA officials and staff led by NIA Administrator Ricardo R. Visaya, with local government officials and beneficiaries.
Other than the Bulo SRIP, the NIA is also set to start the Aklan River Irrigation System (ARIS) project.
The PhP 370-million worth ARIS project is targeted to provide an additional 594 hectares of new service areas to the existing service area of 3,916 hectares already being irrigated by the initial ARIS in Panay Island, Aklan.
Among the municipalities in Aklan expected to benefit from ARIS are Banga, Kalibo, New Washington, Malinao, Lezo, Makato, and Numancia.
Visaya also disclosed about the agency’s possible plans of hiring more technical personnel to handle the construction of the said irrigation projects for efficiency implementation.
