Poe seeks free internet for commuters

Senator Grace Poe has filed a bill which seeks to provide free internet access and clean, accessible sanitary facilities in land transportation terminals, pit stops, stations, and all public commuting areas to give commuters relief from traffic.

According to the Senate Bill 1695, “an efficient and functional inter-province transport system is essential to ensure that Filipinos travel safely.”

“In particular, rest stops are indispensable for those travelling by land, as they provide a brief pit stop for travelers and bus drivers. This is important for Filipinos who travel more than eight hours,” Poe said.

The proposed bill also mandates with owners, operators, administrators of transportation terminals to work with the Department of Information and Communication Technology for the installation of necessary hardware and facilities to give passengers free internet access.

The Department of Transportation, on the other hand, will conduct inspections to ensure establishments’ compliance to free and clean sanitary facilities.

The proposed bill also clarifies that establishments are prohibited from collecting fees from passengers for the use of clean restroom facilities.
