The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has affirmed that The Employees’ Compensation Commission has raised the allowance of persons with work-related disabilities from PhP 574 to PhP 1,000 per month.
According to DOLE Secretary Silvestre Bello III, the said allowance increase is an additional pension given to pensioners in the private and public sector who suffer from work-connected permanent partial and permanent total disabilities.
In a statement, Bello said that the initiative is in line with ECC’s mandate to upgrade benefits and to add new ones, subject to the approval of the President of the Philippines.
“The increase in the Carer’s Allowance is the Commission’s way of ensuring that the package of benefits and services it provides will remain relevant and meaningful,” Bello said.
He also noted that the increase will bolster the over-all effort to lessen poverty, vulnerability, and social exclusion towards improving the quality of life of workers and their families.
ECC Executive Director Stella Zipagan-Banawis shared that the increase in EC Carer’s Allwance provided under the ECC Board Resolution No. 18-12-03 was based on the actuarial study led by the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS).
The study relates that the State Insurance Fund at the GSIS will last beyond 2006 despite the proposed increase in Carer’s Allowance and without requiring EC premium contribution from employers.
