DBP backs cancer institute in Western Visayas

In a bid to meet demands and provide better cancer treatment options in Western Visayas, the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) has approved PhP 259 million term loan to Medicus Cancer Institute, Inc.

According to DBP President and Chief Executive Officer Cecilia C. Borromeo, the loan facility is a testament to the bank’s renewed commitment to expand its support for social services.

“DBP remains committed to expanding financial support to health care institutions such as Medicus Cancer Institute through our loan programs to improve access to quality and affordable health care services to all Filipinos,” Borromeo said.

Medicus Cancer Institute, Inc., a Department of Health-lic­ensed health care facility located in San Rafael, Mandurriao, Iloilo City, is the pioneer in the region to operate the first advanced radiation treatment facility using the Varian Clinac CX Accelerator which is considered as an effective and reliable cancer treatment option.

The facility is only currently available in Manila, South Luzon, Cebu, Davao, and Cagayan de Oro.

The said facility will help Western Visayas cope with both present and potential demand, and will aid patients save time and money by eliminating the need to travel just to seek treatment in Cebu and Manila.

Based on 2010 Philippine Health Statistics by the Department of Health, cancer is the third leading cause of death among Filipinos. In Western Visayas, 0.24% of the population or 241 cancer cases per 100,000 residents were recorded.
