President Rodrigo Duterte said the Philippines intends to buy military hardware from India and described the neighboring Asian country as a ‘rising superpower’ during his first official overseas trip this year.
According to Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, Duterte made the remark because of the commonality between the Philippines and India regarding independent foreign policy.
“Politically, the Philippine President described India as a ‘rising superpower’ that has a moderating effect in international relations,” Roque said.
Aside from India, Duterte has also expressed interest in buying military equipment from China and Russia. Both countries have since donated military paraphernalia to the Philippines.
Duterte went to India for a three-day visit to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) – India Commemorative Summit and India’s Republic Day celebration.
