Duterte to prioritize food and sanitation of Mayon evacuees

President Rodrigo Duterte has vowed to prioritize the food and sanitation needs of affected families due to the current state of Mayon volcano as he visits Legazpi City in Albay.

Over 80,000 residents living in the immediate area near the volcano fled their homes to stay in evacuation centers for safety.

Duterte handed out PhP 25 million-worth of fund to the provincial government and has committed in adding PhP 50 million more to immediately addressed food and sanitation concerns.

“Iyung short-term concern is food and, well, an increased surveillance of contamination,” Duterte said. “If there is a congregation near each other infection can break out in a matter of days. So it is always demanded of the situation that we safeguard health so we have to provide temporary shelters.”

The government has so far released 54 million worth of assistance to be delivered to affected areas through the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Office of Civil Defense, LGUs, and NGOs.

Duterte also said that he want the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to bring in more portable toilets to evacuation centers.

“In the meantime if there is none constructed, we have to somehow deliver a sanitary way of disposing human waste. If there are available portable toilets in Manila, we can always send them,” he said.

Alert level 4 has been raised following the rough comportment of Mayon Volcano, which according to state volcanologists and disaster management officials could last for up to three months.
